IBO ISLAND
Quirimbas Archipelago, Mozambique
Ibo Island lies in the Quirimbas Archipelago of northern Mozambique. Nominated for World Heritage status Ibo has been described as one of the most unique and atmospheric islands in the world. Ibo Island Lodge was built by the community, pioneering tourism development on Ibo. Today either directly or indirectly, the lodge benefits a large part of Ibo's population. Here your visit really does make a difference.
Located on the prime waterfront site where romantic dhows sail out to sea on each high tide Ibo Island lodge encompasses magnificent mansions (Niassa, Ndorwe, Mweezi, Kixewa, Luwa, Juwa, Tataruga, Makonde, Brubuletta and Ngalawa) each over one hundred years old with coral and lime walls over a meter thick, high lofty ceilings and original beams. Ibo Island Lodge has been designed to incorporate the architecture and style of the original ruins.
The lodge accommodates 18 guests in beautifully elegant, yet simple rooms, with indigenous solid teak and mahogany furniture handcrafted by the people of Ibo. All nine bedrooms are individual and feature a king size four-poster, or twin hand crafted beds with crisp cotton linen and Indian silk throws. Bathrooms are all ensuite with twin basins and large marble showers and hot and cold water. Wide verandas are a traditional feature of all Ibo mansions, with comfortable plantation style chairs and soft cushions from where you can enjoy drinks and make the very most of the sea and garden views.
Ibo offers pristine beach excursions, snorkelling, sea kayaking, dhow sailing, birding, mangrove forests, sumptuous seafood, romance, simplicity, tranquillity and a perspective that will change your life forever.
